- Extra-ordinary professor
Prof. Wilfried Niessen studied Chemistry at VU University. In 1986, he obtained his PhD from the University of Amsterdam. He was appointed assistant professor at the Division of Analytical Chemistry at Leiden University in 1986. In 1996, he left academia and established the consulting company Hyphen MassSpec, which provides international training and consultancy in the area of analytical mass spectrometry.
In 2002, Niessen was appointed extra-ordinary professor of Instrumental Analysis (in particular Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry) at VU University. His research interests involve principles, technology and applications of (hyphenated) mass spectrometry and fragmentation of even-electron ions. Prof. Niessen is (co-)author of almost 200 refereed papers in the scientific literature. Prof Niessen was guest-editor on five MS-related special issues in Journal of Chromatography A, editor of Volume 8 (hyphenated methods) of the Encyclopedia of Mass Spectrometry, and author of Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (3rd Edition, 2006). From July 2010 until April 2013, Niessen was interim head of the former Division of Biomolecular Analysis and Spectroscopy at VU University.
