Professor of Biocomputational Chemistry for Drug Innovation

Prof. dr. Iwan de Esch studied Organic Chemistry at Radboud University Nijmegen. From 1994 to 1998, he performed his PhD at the Department of Pharmacochemistry at VU University Amsterdam. He became a research associate in the drug design group at the University of Cambridge in 1998. Dr. De Esch co-founded De Novo Pharmaceuticals in 2000, where he worked as a group and project leader. He returned to academia in 2003 and is now associate professor in the Division of Medicinal Chemistry. His main research interests lie in translating the abundantly available structural and ligand-based data into new drugs, by the design of focused compound libraries and the synthesis of ligands using parallel chemistry approaches.

In 2007, Dr. de Esch became co-founder of IOTA Pharmaceuticals: a company that is aimed to valorize the successful fragment-based drug design research line. He is also co-founder of emptyGriffin Pharmaceuticals. In 2011, he was awarded the Galenus Research Price for his work on fragment-based drug design.  De Esch was appointed professor of Biocomputational Chemistry for Drug Innovation at VU University Amsterdam.
