Chris Slootweg studied chemistry at the VU University Amsterdam. During his M.Sc. at the University of Sussex (Prof. M.F. Lappert) he was exposed to silicon chemistry and at the University of Amsterdam (Prof. P.W.N.M. van Leeuwen) to homogeneous catalysis. He received his Ph.D. in 2005 (Prof. K. Lammertsma) on highly strained organophosphorus compounds. As a postdoctoral fellow he studied C-H activation (Prof. P. Chen) at the ETH Zürich in Switzerland, for which he received a TALENT stipend from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). In 2006, he returned as an assistant professor to the VU University Amsterdam, where he is exploring his interests in main-group chemistry and organometallic chemistry with the aim of developing novel building blocks for the creation of functional materials and designed catalyst structures for sustainable chemistry. In 2012-2013, Chris is visiting professor at the University of Toulouse, France, and from January 2013 he will coordinate the Marie Curie Initial Training Network SusPhos targeting the eco-friendly production, smart use, recycling and commercial exploitation of phosphorus-based processes and materials that use the precious element phosphorus in a sustainable manner.
