Professor of Theoretical Organic Chemistry and Biocatalysis

Matthias Bickelhaupt holds chairs in theoretical organic chemistry at VU University Amsterdam and Radboud University Nijmegen. He did his Master’s in Theoretical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at VU University and then carried out his PhD research at the University of Amsterdam with professors Nico Nibbering and Evert Jan Baerends in the field of mass spectrometry and theoretical chemistry. Thereafter, Bickelhaupt worked as a postdoctoral associate with professors Paul Schleyer (Erlangen, Germany), Tom Ziegler (Calgary, Canada), Roald Hoffmann (Cornell University) and Evert Jan Baerends (VU University). Between 1997 and 1999, he was assistant professor at Philipps-Universität Marburg. In 1999, he was appointed tenured assistant professor at VU Amsterdam, in 2003 associate professor and in 2009 full professor.

Matthias Bickelhaupt is the winner of various awards and grants among which a Habilitation Fellowship of the German Science Foundation (DFG), the Young Chemists award of the Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research (NWO) and the VICI award. He is interested in developing chemical theories and methods for rationally designing molecules, nano-structures and materials as well as chemical processes toward these compounds, based on quantum mechanics and advanced computer simulations. An essential part of these efforts is the application of our theories and models in cooperation with experimental groups. Matthias Bickelhaupt's research profile comprises four main directions of research that are intimately connected and reinforce each other: (1) Structure and Chemical Bonding in Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT), (2) Molecular Recognition and Theoretical Biochemistry, (3) Elementary Chemical Reactions, and (4) Fragment-oriented Design of (Bio-)Catalysts.
